Intermittent Fasting for Beginners: My 8-Month Experience
Here’s my honest, no-BS review after 8 months of intermittent fasting (IF) as a complete beginner back in early 2025.
### What I Actually Did
- Started with 16/8 (16 hours fasting, 8-hour eating window) — usually 12 PM to 8 PM
- After ~6 weeks, some days naturally stretched to 18/6 or even OMAD (one meal a day)
- Never did extended fasts longer than 24 hours (didn’t feel the need)
- Zero calorie tracking the first 3 months, then light tracking just to make sure protein was decent
- Drank black coffee, plain tea, water, and electrolytes (LMNT or homemade salt water) during fasting window — no “bulletproof” nonsense
### Physical Results (39M, was 202 lbs → now 171 lbs)
- Lost 31 lbs total, ~90% of it fat (DEXA confirmed)
- Waist went from 36" to 31.5" (actually had to buy new belts, annoying but awesome)
- Visible abs for the first time since college (still not shredded, but they exist)
- Strength in the gym stayed the same or slightly went up (still hitting PRs at lower bodyweight)
- Bloodwork: triglycerides down 60%, fasting glucose down from 99 → 87, HDL up
### The Real Day-to-Day Experience
Month 1: Pure suffering
- Hungry all the time until about day 10
- Irritable as hell (my wife still brings up “the great 2025 hanger period”)
- Slept terribly for the first week
Month 2–3: The “flip”
- Hunger basically disappeared (now I wake up at 7 AM and don’t even think about food until noon)
- Mental clarity in the morning became ridiculous — best work gets done fasted
- Started loving the simplicity: no breakfast mess, fewer decisions
Month 4–8: New normal
- Eating window feels like plenty of time. I eat two large meals and sometimes a small snack.
- Social life barely affected — just shift the window on weekends (e.g., 2 PM–10 PM if going out)
- Travel is actually easier — skip plane food, land, eat a real meal
- Cravings for junk food almost gone (used to crush a bag of chips nightly)
### What Nobody Tells Beginners
1. The first 10–14 days suck. Push through or start with 14/10 instead of jumping to 16/8.
2. You will lose muscle if you’re an idiot about protein and training. I prioritized 1.6–2 g/kg protein and kept lifting heavy 4x/week.
3. Electrolytes matter more than people admit — I got random heart palpitations until I started salting my water.
4. Women seem to have a rougher time (from what I’ve seen with friends). Several female friends stalled or felt awful on 16/8 and do better with 14/10 or Crescendo fasting.
5. You don’t need to fast “clean” forever. I still do a 24-hour fast once a month just because it feels good now.
### My Current Routine (8 months in)
- Weekdays: 16–18 hours fasted (12–1 PM first meal)
- Weekends: Usually 14/10 or eat normally if big social stuff
- Still no calorie counting 80% of days — just eat protein first and until full
- Weight has been stable ±2 lbs for the last 3 months even while eating whatever I want in the window (yes, including pizza and ice cream)
### Bottom Line
Intermittent fasting was the lowest-effort, highest-reward change I’ve ever made for body composition and mental clarity. It’s not magic — you still have to not be a moron during your eating window — but the structure removes so many decisions that diets usually fail on.
If you’re on the fence: try 14/10 for two weeks. If you hate it, quit. If you feel like I did after week 3, you’ll never go back to grazing all day.
Happy to answer any specific questions about protocols, what I eat, workouts, etc.
